17 Therefore
this is what
Adonai says:
`Your wife shall whore
in the city!
Your sons
and your daughters shall
fall by the sword,
and your land
shared out
by measure by the victors.
You yourself
shall die in an impure land,
and Israel will surely go
into exile far from her
land.' "

1 This is
what my Lord
Adonai showed me. Look!
a basket of fruit from
summer's end.
2 He said,
"What
do you see, Amos?"
And I said,
"A basket of fruit from summer's end."
Then Adonai
said to
me,
"The end
is coming for my people
Israel;
I
will not again pass
them by.
3 They will wail
out the temple
songs
in that day,"
(My
Lord
Adonai's oracle)
"the corpses are numerous, everywhere thrown out.
Shush!"

4 Hear
this: You're persecuting the needy,
destroying the humble
of the land.
5 saying, "When will the new moon be over
so that we may sell corn;
and the Sabbath,
so that we may offer wheat?
Making the measure small and the price great,
with the help of crooked deceitful scales,
6 acquiring the poor
with silver
and the needy
for the sake of a
pair of sandals,
and selling the husks of the wheat."
7 Adonai
has sworn
by the pride of Jacob:
Surely I will never
forget any of their actions.
8 Will the land
not tremble
because of
this,
and everyone who
lives in it mourn?
It will all rise
like a river,
and it will
be driven away and collapse,
like the Nile
of Egypt.
9 It will come about on that day,
(Lord Adonai's oracle)
that I will make the sun set at noon,
and darken the land in broad daylight.
10 I will transform
your festivals
into mourning,
and all your songs into dirges;
I will bring
sackcloth round
each waist,
and baldness
to every head;
I will make it like mourning
for an only son,
and it ends
like a bitter
day.
11 Days
are surely coming,
(My Lord
Adonai's
oracle.)
when I
will send hunger on
the land;
not hunger
for bread, or thirst for water,
but
for hearing Adonai's
words.
12 They will stagger
from sea to sea,
and from north
to east;
they will run back and forth,
seeking the message
of Adonai,
but
they'll not find it.
13 In that day beautiful young women and young men shall faint of thirst.
14 Swearing by Samaria's guilt,
they say, "as your god lives,
Dan!"
and, "as the road
to Beer-sheba lives!"
-
they will fall,
and not rise again.
1 I saw my
lord standing on the altar,
and he said:
"Strike the capitals and the thresholds
will shake.
Break them on all their heads.
Those left, I will
kill with the sword;
not one who runs
away shall get away,
not a fugitive shall escape.
2 If they dig to Sheol,
from there
my hand will take them;
if they climb
to heaven,
from there
I will bring them down.
3 If they hide on Carmel's
crest,
from there
I will search and take them;
if they hide from my sight on the
sea bed,
there
I will command the
serpent,
and it will bite
them.
4 if they go
into captivity before their enemies,
there
I will command the
sword,
and it will
kill them.
I will fix my eyes on them
for evil
and not for good.
