The Near East is a dry region and a supply of water is the necessary condition of life. For this reason population is centered largely in the "Fertile Crescent" around the rivers Tigris, Euphrates, Nile and on the western slopes of the Mediterranean coast (where rain falls as the moist clouds rise).
Most of the peoples of this region, except Egypt, were Semites - speakers of languages belonging to the Semitic family.
