Solomon's son with an Ammonite mother (1 Kgs 14:31). According to Kings he briefly succeeded Solomon as king of the United Monarchy but when the northern tribes revolted and made Jeroboam king he was left ruling only Judah.
Rehoboam is said to have constructed fortresses to protect the high country of Judah (2 Chron 11:5-10) probably in connection with an invasion by Pharaoh Shishak in about 920 BCE. Digs at Tell Beit Mirsim, Lachish, and Beer-sheba may confirm Shishak's success.
