Levite

According to biblical tradition Aaron (the first High Priest) was from the tribe of Levi. All priests were Levites, and this tribe was allocated no land in the division of the spoils of Canaan. For this reason there were special provisions for them in many biblical laws. Some scholars believe that Levites who were not functioning as priests became local "preachers" who passed on the traditions. One collection often seen as an example of levitical preaching is the version of Moses torah contained in Deuteronomy.
