10 Amaziah, priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam, King of Israel, saying:
"Amos has conspired against you in
the heart of the house of Israel; the land is not able to support
all his words.
11 For this
is what Amos says:
`Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and Israel will surely go into exile from its land.'"
12 And Amaziah said to Amos,
"Seer, go, run away [back] to the land
of Judah,
eat your bread there, and there act the prophet;
13 but never again prophesy in Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary,
and a royal temple."
14 Then Amos answered Amaziah,
"I am no prophet, I am no member of
the prophet's guild;
but I am a herdsman, and prepare sycamore [feed],
15 and Adonai took me when I was following the flock, and Adonai
said to me,
'Go, prophesy to my people Israel!'
16 "So, now, hear Adonai's message.
`Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.'
17 Therefore this is what Adonai says:
`Your wife shall whore in the city!
Your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword,
and your land shared out by measure by the victors.
You yourself shall die in an impure land,
and Israel will surely go into exile far from her land.' "
