ילל yll "howl, wail" the root is found in most prophetic books but only once elsewhere (Dt 32:10) in Amos 8:3 the temple songs will be "wailed out" when Adonai's day of punishment dawns.

That "wailing" was commonly associated with mourning (as it is in Am 8:3) can be seen in much of the prophetic usage: Is 15:2, 3; 23:1, 6, 14; Jer 4:8; 25:34; Joel 1:13; Mic 1:8; Zeph 1:11; Zech 11:2.
