צַלְמָוֶת tsalmawet formed by joining words for "darkness" and "death" (giving the gloriously evocative KJV rendering in Ps 23:4 "valley of the shadow of death" more recent translations have the more prosaic "deep darkness") it occurs 18 times in the Bible, mainly in Psalms and Job, but also in Jer and Is as well as in the psalm fragment in Am 5:8.
