נַחַל nachal "torrent, wadi" used in the names of various stream beds as geographical locations as well as for the water which floods there during rains. The traditional English renderings "stream, brook" with their suggestion of relatively peaceful water seldom capture the flavor of the original. After rain, the sudden rush of water down these steep-sided channels is dangerous and often carries sheep or humans to their death.

The word is used in Amos at 6:14 in the name of the Wadi Arabah and at 5:24.
