hiphil "spread out, incline, stretch
out, push aside" three times in Amos: 2:7,
8; 5:12. The first and last of these seem to be used in similar
ways: "pushing aside the humble from the path" and "push aside
the needy in the gate". 2:8 however seems to use another
sense of the word: "spread out beside every altar". Such use of the
same word in different ways in adjacent verses is typical of the prophets' love
of word play.
