לֶחֶם lechem "bread, food" a very common word, sometimes used specifically of the staple food, bread, often of food in general (this kind of synecdoche is common in many cultures). In Amos the word appears just three times, twice of famine and once of "earning your crust". In 4:6 the famine is literal, in 8:11 the real famine is lack of divine communication; while at 7:12 Amaziah, the priest, suggests a prophet with such a message might "earn his crust" better in Judah.
