בַּיִת bayit (construct beth) "house" frequent word, with three related meanings

(i) dwelling: "winter house and summer house" Am 3:15, or temple - viewed as home of the god - Am 2:8; 7:13 (in parallel with miqdash "sanctuary").

(ii) family: "house of David" or in Amos "house of Jeroboam" 7:9. Ancient society was organized in a series of "levels". Everyone was part of a patriarchal household (beth 'ab "father's house") these households were part of clans and tribes

(iii) nation: "house of Jacob" 3:13, 9:8, "house of Israel" 5:1, 4, 25, 6:1, 14, 7:10, 9:9, or "house of Joseph" 5:6, "house of Isaac" 7:16.
