אֶבְיוֹן
'ebyon refers to the needy, and more broadly to those of the lowest social status. In Amos (2:6; 4:1; 5:12;
8:4,6) it is over ten times more
frequent per thousand words than in other prophetic books. Only Job, Psalms and
Proverbs approach Amos' use of 'ebyon. Interestingly it is an example of
the vocabulary which links this book to wisdom
traditions. (On this compare
