synecdoche

Figure of speech where an idea is used to mean some associated idea. Often in the Bible this transfer of meaning occurs where a part is mentioned but the whole is meant. This is probably the case in Am 9:1 where the "capital" of a pillar and the "threshold" are mentioned following the "altar" to speak of the whole temple complex.
