Religion commonly seeks representation of the holy. Humans like to imagine what they worship. Since the Jewish/Christian/Muslim religious tradition claims God forbids such images, at various periods in history iconoclasts have destroyed the current "pictures". One such period was the destruction of local sanctuaries under Josiah, king of Judah.
